These Example Lessons Are Available for Use
These example lessons are free for use in any classroom in any school. If you are a teacher, by using the example lessons of another school, you can learn whether your students would enjoy having their own contest. Alternatively, using these graphs can help build excitement for a contest you will be having. The students will most likely prefer their own data instead of that from some other school.
Start Your Own Contest and Create your Own Lessons
Currently, 6 different graph lessons are available (Dec, 2007) to any school hosting its own biking contest. See the lesson schedule, or the range of math topics covered by the lesson series. These lessons have been written to cover specific areas of National Teaching Standards.
These Lessons Save Teachers Time
Starting a biking contest should take about 30 minutes of the teacher's time. Contests usually are 10 weeks long depending upon the weather patterns in the area. Assuming it takes 30 minutes for a teacher to prepare a lesson....
The BikeWithMe system saves a math teacher over 3 hours of time to prepare exciting graphing lessons.
Also a Wellness and Lifestyle Emphasis
Naturally, the lessons present or ask about concepts important in teaching middle school level mathematics. But, in addition, woven into the presentation, are suggestions, ideas, and concepts related to living a healthy, active lifestyle. Given the ongoing, escalating obesity crises, which is affecting all age groups but particuarly the young, it is important to shape the values and attitudes of today's young people so they may have healthy and long lives.
